We are proud to offer our Healthy Bones program.

We are highly trained Comprehensive Pilates Instructors with additional expertise training and experience in osteoporosis. We are here to help you live your life better!

Our modified Pilates program is designed for those with osteopenia or osteoporosis and can also be used with individuals who have spinal fusions, scoliosis reconstructive surgeries, or acute pain where we simply want to limit forces on your spine. We follow current research, the National Osteoporosis Foundation guidelines and best practices in the industry. Many fitness professionals just don’t learn how important these spine safe movements are but the data and research is very clear. Pilates for bone strength is not “baby” Pilates, just different to make sure we get you as strong as we can safely! You will definitely get a workout in and never be the wiser!

Benefits to Bones: Your bones respond best to weight based and site-specific training to stimulate bone growth. Variety helps challenge your muscles and bones. The more you exercise, the more you build. Your balance and fall risk will improve as well! You are never too old to help improve your bone strength!

Movements We Avoid: Osteopenia and Osteoporosis are treated the same at GFP from an exercise standpoint. We want to AVOID fractures and teach you how to move better in life. We avoid certain movements like flexion and rotation to reduce your fracture risk. We focus on strengthening your back and postural muscles and give you site-specific variety to stimulate good bones!

We will ask to see your most recent and past DEXA scans. We use these to gain insight about your bone density to plan your individualized sessions. 

DEXA Scan: A bone density test (DEXA) is a diagnostic test to assess your bone density as normal, low or osteoporosis. Low bone density places you at risk for breaking a bone. A T score of -2.5 means you have lost %25 of your cortical bone mass and have osteoporosis. A score of -1 to -2.5 is Osteopenia.

In addition to building your bones safely from an exercise standpoint, we are thrilled to have holistic integrative nutrition and counseling and testing available in-house for clients. You do not need to be a GFP Pilates client to use these services! We also have InBody at our studio which is incredible to help track your skeletal muscle mass growth to protect your bones.
