Equipment guide
A visual introduction to the apparatus—and why a classical-inspired studio offers more than a reformer.

A clear answer
Pilates equipment can include the reformer, tower, chair, and barrels, alongside mat work and props. Springs, moving surfaces, and shaped supports create different ways to explore resistance, assistance, balance, and control. Great Falls Pilates teaches across this wider system.
The reformer has a carriage that moves along a frame. Springs connect the carriage to the frame, and straps and a footbar offer different ways to position the body and interact with the apparatus.
The springs may support a movement or create resistance, depending on the exercise. A different spring setting is not simply a harder or easier workout. Your instructor explains the setup and helps you understand how it relates to the movement.

Tower work uses a mat surface with an upright frame, springs, and bars. It can be performed in different positions, with the apparatus providing resistance or support.
The studio’s Tower format combines classical mat and tower work. Your instructor manages the equipment setup and introduces progressions appropriate to the class.

Pilates chairs use a pedal connected to springs. Exercises may be performed seated, standing, or in other supported positions, depending on the equipment and the movement.
The studio’s Chair format uses Wunda and MVE chairs. It can explore balance, hip and shoulder control, and coordinated movement. Ask which class is appropriate before trying a new apparatus.

Barrels provide curved surfaces for positioning and support. Mat work uses the body’s relationship with the floor and gravity. Small props can offer additional feedback or support.
The value of the full system is the variety of ways it lets you explore movement. You do not need to master every apparatus at once. Your instructor helps you build familiarity over time.

Follow your instructor’s directions and ask before changing an unfamiliar setup. Springs, straps, and bars require careful handling.
Not necessarily. Equipment choices depend on the session format, instructor, and goals of the work.
